Photos taken at Pope’s Island – near the bridge that connecting New Bedford and Fairhaven while we’re waiting for the bridge to be open (it was closed for the ships to pass).
Anyway about the statue above: it is a tribute to the Portuguese prince Henry the Navigator and made from large granite and bronze statue overlooks New Bedford harbor. Prince Henry is credited as being the father of modern celestial navigation techniques. In the early days of the Age of Discovery, Prince Henry and his cosmographers provided seamen with techniques for determining their position when out of sight of land. Dedicated in 1994, the statue was a gift to the city from the Prince Henry Society of New Bedford in conjunction with the Portuguese government (source from here).
